Nothing better than going to an exhibition and coming out enlightened. If you have an interest or even a vague interest in photography, get along to this viewing, which ends March 7th,2010. There are over 200 photographs from the British Library's own collection and impressive they are. From the dawn of photography to the early 1900's, it shows how the importance of photography grew from humble beginnings to being a major player and how it set the foundations for where we are today, for all aspects of our society, from social to celebrity, commercial, war, conflicts and disasters. Were the Victorians interested by the famous and newsworthy as we are today?Absolutely! The rise of illustrated newspapers from the 1850's fuelled by faster communications and more people being able to read encouraged the publication of celebrity portraits.
